MapQuest's New Gas, Alt-Fuel Locator

Mapquest1

MapQuest has launched a new section called MapQuest Gas Prices that will track down nearby gas stations and sort them by their per-gallon price, as well as by distance. If you think that’s handy, people who drive cars that run on diesel, E-85 and compressed natural gas will be able to find those fuel stations as well. The site is easy to use if you’ve ever tried mapping a location on it or other sites like it.

According to MapQuest, it receives pricing data from more than 100,000 gas stations and uses information from the U.S. Department of Energy to provide the alternative-fuel locations.

maybe this should help Mapquest steal some of Google Maps' thunder.

It's definitely neat how it's integrated, but the data are the same found elsewhere in less slick formats. Unfortunately, it doesn't always distinguish between who 'has' the fuel and who will actually sell it to the public. Alternative fuels are used overwhelmingly by fleets of one sort or another. Any time it's a park district or municipality or something like that, you have to phone them, and you're likely to find that it's for their use only. That's helpful ... how?

Yeah, another website with gas prices that are almost current, but not quite. And what happens if the prices are different when you get to the station? I found a better idea at www.zipgas.com. It's not live yet but it sure looks like it will be better.
