98,000 Chevrolet Cobalt Coupes Recalled

2005chevycobalt

GM is recalling more than 98,000 2005 – 06 Chevrolet Cobalt coupes to upgrade their side-impact protection. The recalled vehicles are ones not equipped with optional side-impact airbags, and potential harm is only to drivers or passengers not wearing seat belts.

There have been no injuries related to the recall. GM is having dealers install energy-absorbing plastic in the affected areas. Concerned Cobalt owners can call Chevrolet at (800) 630-2438 for more information.

there is probably a reason for it and i dont know it but, why didnt GM just make side-impact airbags standard?

Questions

Why are people in cars not wearing seatbelts? As you notice it only said drivers or passengers not wearing seatbelts. If we could just make the people wear seatbelts standard, then we wouldn't have these problems.

Paul

Remember, this is how you "beef" up a Cobalt....with "energy absorbing plastic".....

Didnt Lutz claim this car was far superior to the unlamented Cavalier?
Shows he doesnt know everything about his own cars.
Cobalt=glorified Cavalier

Paul,
Since this was an incident of people without safety belts on I'm betting a lot of other small cars won't pass the same test. A recent lawsuit against ford by people injured even though they weren't wearing safety belts probably led to the decision.

Graham

Paul: If you look in the doors of pretty much any current car you will find, yes, energy absorbing plastic. You will also find it between the bumper covers and metal armature behind the cover. The reason is simple: it absorbs energy rather well. Ever tried to crush a block of styrofoam?

Troy

I happy to know GM isn't afraid to correct a problem. Sure, maybe the "beef up" should have been added during the design phase but, nothing's perfect. KUDOS GM.

I have a 2007 chevy cobalt and I love it, it is sooo smooth riding and it's pretty cute too!

Troy

I agree on people should be wearing there seatbelts.. a law in most states. Now, if we could get thm to actually use there blinkers.. oh yeah.. they can't because they are talking on ther cell phones...

Anyone have an '06 Chevy Cobalt coupe with airbags that didn't deploy in an accident?

Melissa Bricker

Anyone own a 2007 Chevy cobalt that is giving them problems (example: a knocking noise). Please contact me I'm filing a class action law suit and I need help we need GM to own up and buy these cars back! mbricker@wcsr.com

I OWN A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT AND HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT TROUBLE WITH IT. THIS WEEKEND IT CAUSED ME TO WRECK DUE TO THE DRIVE TRAIN BREAKING. IF ANYONE HAS HAD TROUBLE WITH THEIRS(ROTERS, BRAKES,TRANSMISSION,DRIVE TRAIN OR ELECTRICAL) PLEASE CONTACT ME

Kim Alexander

To comment on Melissa Bricker's problem. Yes! I am having prblems with my 2006 Chev. Cobalt. It shakes violently about 30 minutes after being on the highway. It shakes so badly that I think I am going to loose control of the car! I have to pull over to the side of the road and stop for awhile before getting back on the road. It will go for a few more miles and then starts all over again. It is getting very frustrating. The dealer cannot duplicate. They never drive it that long. I will email you. They need to take these cars off the road. They are a safety hazard!

To Milissa Bricker, I tried to email you and it would not go thru. Please email me at kimgalex@gmail.com I am interested in the class action lawsuit you are working on.

try checking the tires, maybe you have a bubble.

Don't whine when you only spend 10K on a new car, maintain your car properly and it won't have these problems.

new 2007 cobalt/junk/vibrates/$20,000 car/lt/dealer cant wont fix. I am interested in a lawsuit against these cheating dealers and company.

gary newhart

New cobalt with existing problem of vibration and humm at 65 mph plus. Been in the shop in excess of 7 times. Bradley chev in Franlin IN> says they do not know how to fix. GM says tough luck. this is a brand new &20,000 cobalt. If you want one of these, please drive it first to verify it is ok. This car has hankook tires????
Hope you cobalt owners have better luck than me.

My son had a 07 cobalt. He had a front end colision in Dec. 07. Jan 31, 08 he had a side colision that resulted in his death. The air bags did not deploy in either wreck. I couldn't get a lawyer to touch it. Anyone hearing these kinds of things?

Ed Wescott

We own an 05 Cobalt since new. It has been well maintained at the dealership and has only 27K miles on it. The tires have less than 7K miles on them. This car has had "the shakes" really bad four times in three years.
Yesterday it started shaking while I was doing 75 MPH on I-95. I was in four lanes of traffic and I could not slow down or pull over.
No place to go.
It goes into the dealer tomorrow.
It looks like GM has a common problem here.
Anybody have any luck getting it fixed?
We have an extended warranty.
If they can't fix it we will trade it in.
It scared me that bad.
BEWARE

I have a 2007 Cobalt ,I have put on 25000 miles in10 months. This car has not given me a single problem. All cars need to be maintained( air pressure, oil, etc. If your car has problems and still under warranty take it to the dealer or a different dealer if you dont get results. Do not give up keep on them to fix it right or start sending emails to GM, someone will wake up and help.

i had a car rental which was a chevy cobalt and yesterday morning while on the highway.....someone put his blinker on to come into my lane, (not looking of course) and as he came into my lane, i swerved out of the way (this was the lane next to the breakdown lane). my steering wheel acted as if it were on ice. as i tried to regain control and steer back, the car went into a life of its own.....spinning in a 360 circle so fast, i knew i was going to be killed. i was praying dear God. i was spinning and spinning across the whole highway.......i luckily ended up with a small car hitting my passenger side as i sat sideways facing the highway half in the high speed lane and half on the grass.

i am so lucky to be alive, but i just know that shouldn't have happened. i think something is wrong with the car. my airbags did not deploy either.

Cheryl

I was driving my car when I rear-ended a car travelling almost 20 miles an hour slower than me (it was not my fault according to the police report, they pulled out in front of me.) My car came to almost a dead stop.

The airbags never deployed.

The whole front end of my car is almost entirely gone.

Daughters (16 and 13) wrecked in an 2006 Cobalt (totaled) June 20, 2008. Total loss of steering control at 65 mph. Flipped at least twice, came to rest upside down. Thank God they are ok. Blessed to be alive. Sorry for your loss Bob. Also you guys hoping the dealer will fix it...good luck!. Steering problems? Do yourself a favor, trade it to a dealer. Let them be responsible for unloading junk to someone else.

John

Quick question to anybody I'm renting a 07 Cobalt where's the switch for the blinkers?????

I purchased a 07 Cobalt 2 months ago it had the "shakes" on the highway going 60-65 mph as well as slight humm while driving around 35 mph. i took it back to the dealer demanded 4 new tires and got them put on and haven't had a problem since.before going as far as a law suit try a set of new tires! just remember there is good and bad in any vehicle you buy Ford, Dodge . just keep it well maintained air pressure, oil changes etc and enjoy a long car life!!

Anyone driving a Cobalt or allowing one of there loved ones to drive it, need;s to have plenty good kharma and lot's of prayers for this car is a accident waiting to happen,Randy 30yr mechanic

Brenda C.

I drive a Pacifica and got re-ended on Saturday. The other person's insurance only gave me a Cobalt for a rental car, which I think I commented to the rental car company it kind of feels like a death trap and I didn't feel safe driving it, but it was the only car they had on the lot. So driving home from work today, I was going completely straight and the car began to fish tale when I lightly touched my brakes. Even when I let off of them, I had no contorl over the steering... luckily I went off the right side of the road and not into oncoming traffic. Unluckily I the front end hit the only fire hydrant in miles. A ton of damage for an impact speed of 5 to 10 mph. Airbags did not deploy.

jeff l.

almost 2 years ago i slid on a patch of ice going down a hill in my cobalt and hit a telephone pole on the passenger side going about 20mph. totaled. airbags did not go off, but it was a side impact so i did not think much of it.

a couple days ago my friend was driving and didnt see brake lights in front of her. in her cobalt going around 35 mph. her airbags didnt go off either.

i was curious to see if there were other people with similar situations. these cobalts are very cheaply made and designed. glad to be driving a Honda Ridgeline now.

I bought my daughter a 2005 Cobalt, has new tires, gets the shakes bad about every 2000 miles, have to pull over to make it stop. Chev dealership could find nothing wrong. Now the brake lights are staying on sometimes and today she said she was driving and it just started slowing down on its own and said it was out of gas, turned car off and restarted and it was fine. Need help, anyone know what is going on.

Samantha

Have had my Cobalt about 2 years now no problems until this week. The Antifreeze is going somewhere it isn't leaking out on the ground it isn't in the oil, and it isn't leaking inside the car. Was wandering if anyone else was having this problem.

I have a 2006 Cobalt. I got the car for my 18th B-day months later my key keeps getting stuck in my steering wheel, and sometimes it doesn't start...What kind of BS is that, new car but its having crappy problems already..

John

2007 Chevy Cobalt with 18k had a knocking noise in the front end. Turned out to be control arm bushings worn so bad the control arms banged on the frame. They put new ones on under warrantee. Now the front end is so tight. I'm afraid when I go over a pebble that somethings going to break. I too have been a mechanic for 30 plus years. I have a hum in my drive train as well as air noise comming in around the winshield and doors while driving on the highway... Little car has to go... its a junk. too bad I get 35mpg

Robert

2007 cobalt control arms replaced ($350) new goodyear tires ($300) new breaks ($70) now it has vibration around 65-80 mph and awful noise from the tires when coming to a slow stop. any idea, anyone?

Gerri-lynn Martin

On the way to a funeral Friday 6/26/09 my 2005 Chevy cobalt was in an accident. My car is totaled. The air bags never deployed. My husband ended up with whiplash, I bumped my head and bruised my leg really bad. My son in the back seat hurt is arm and leg. Is there some sort of law suit against the manufacturer about the air bags not deploying. If so will someone let me know. Thanks

Linda

My son died in a single car accident, I believe it to be due to the power
steering going out in this car 2006 Cobalt. I would appreciate any information you have
gathered if you are willing to share. Please email me if you have lost a family member in the a one car accident in 2006 Cobalt. I am working on a class action lawsuit if there are other similar cases. If not they should take this car off the road. It is a death trap. Thanks! Linda

We bought a used 2009 Cobalt with about 30,000 miles on it. It drives fine at up to about 60 mph. At 65 mph it gets a fairly loud "rumble strip" noise somewhere in the car. Dealer has replaced right and left hub bearings, rotors and pads, balanced the front 17" aluminum wheels/Pirelli tires. Still gets that noise at 65 mph. Anyone have this, and if so how did you get rid of it? Thanks!

James

I also had the knocking that occurred when I shifted into 1st & 2nd gear and when I went over road bumps. 2007 Cobalt LS, just hit 24k. Turned out to be the control arm bushings. Replaced for free under warranty. Dealership said it was probably due to the horrendous pot holes that my city sees, which I admit to have landed in several times.

ashley

I have a 2007 chevy cobalt. I have had nothing but problems with it since i bought it. I was in a bad wreck and none of my air bags deployed. My brakes, rotars, and some other things have been giving me major problems. If anyone has been experiencing the same problems please let me know. I am scared to drive my car lately, i was just wondering if anyone has had the same problems?? thanks.

Megan

I have put 47K miles on my 07 Cobalt, but I have had many more problems than I should have with a "new" car.

1. The rumbling/shaking noise around 50mph comes and goes. I have replaced the brakes and rotors, and it still happens. It's quite scary because the steering wheel actually vibrates pretty hard!

2. At 36,000 miles, my car FAILED it's annual inspection and I had to replace both struts in the front because they were broken and leaking (oil?).

3. If it is raining or snowing my car loves to fishtail in circles when I apply the brakes. It's actually very similar to a rear-wheel drive car.

4. And finally now at 47,000 miles, it was towed into the shop this evening because it wouldn't start today. The battery is fine and it has gas, etc. The AAA mechanic could find NOTHING wrong with it.

It's been a long 2 year relationship and this car is paid off, but I wonder if it's time for an upgrade!?!

I also think it's fightening that everyone on this site is having very similar problems. What can we do?

Elva

You can buy a Cobalt. They are good cars, until, problems start. The electronic power steering is dangerous.I suppose thats why there are gag orders .To keep everyone from knowing the truth.Buyer Beware.

kel

I HAD a 2007 Chevy Cobalt LS. Rear ended someone HEAD ON and HARD- air bags did not deploy-car is totaled.
I WAS wearing my seatbelt...but because the air bags did NOT deploy the cops did not belive me. Finally they belived me...I sent an email to GM yesterday and they called me back today leaving a message to call them back. Im hoping to get some cash from them :) who knows ... I might be lucky!!

jessica

well i have a 2005 cobalt, it has been to the shop several times for warranty issues at 35000 miles struts went bad, and a few other things. Now i have a rumbling, bouncing feeling in the front end when i drive it. The tires are new, any ideas? jltiglio@gmail.com

timmy

I just got the 2007 cobalt a couple years ago and its been running fine but just recently at around 35,000 miles the engine just started making a clicking sound and just last night a couple days later i parked it for a couple hours, and when i tried to crank it up it'll idle like normal for about a half a second then cut off and send smoke out of the tail pipe that smells like oil treated gas or something. The dealer i got the car from is in another state and i don't have the money to put it in the shop any ideas of what it could be.

Paul

Cobalt= a polished Cavalier.
No matter what platform they build the car on,or what engine they use (Ecotec),GM builds horrible compact cars...always has.Skylark,Citation,Phoenix,Omega,Achieva,Grand AM,Corsica,Beretta...and they have among the worst crash test outcome of any car.GMs planned Cobalt replacement (Spark?)probably wont be a whole lot better either.

Mahogany

I was hit by a drunk driver 10/10/09. I drive a 2005 Chevy Cobalt, the airbags did not deploy and as a result of that burst my nose and lip. My knee is messed up. THe car is totaled. Don't know what to do. This was the second accident front end and no airbag deployment.

Megan Seymour

I have a 07 Chevy Cobalt LS Coupe.
I am having multiple problems with mine, (in order) such as-
1. power steering went out while I was driving!
2. airbags not deploying.
3. headlights won't work on auto.
4. it uses as much gas as an diesel truck!

I thought it was my fuses at first but none of them are blown. I'm seriously interested in a lawsuit against GM!

anthony

wow i wish i read this before i bought this junk. i have a cobalt 2007 and ive had it for 9 months and it is going into the shop for the third time in 6 days. the knocking in the brakes the pulsating while u drive... they cant find anything wrong with this. just down right awful

Chandra McMurray

I had a 2007 colbalt and in April 2008 I had hit a gardrail going about 70mph on the highway and hit a gardrail head on. There airbags never deployed, my brother was hospitalized and I was injured as bad.... Chevy said there was no recall so there was nothing they could do. Hired an attorney and they would kepp the case because I had already called chevy and filed the defect. Plus they wanted me to buy my totaled piece of junk from the tow yard for 1200.00.... I had to purchase another car how in the heck could I afford to do that. My insurance company said that the airbags should have deployed, that it was a manufactural defect when the car was inspected. They told us we were lucky to be alive. Please anyone with any information email me at chandra0422@hotmail.com

bob

I have a Cobalt 36K, and braking is terrible. I have spun out 3 times. I've read that you must set the parking brake in order to adjust rear brakes. Seems to be better, but I'll never trust this piece of crap car again. wish i could afford to dump it

I have an 08 cobalt and sister has 07. Best cars we have ever owned.

Wow...well I dnt know about all of those problems, I own a 2007 Chevy Cobalt LS coupe nd it is the love of my life!!
Only problem im having with it though, is the coolant temperature going up too high. It goes up to 220 degrees when I'm in traffic or when the car is on but not moving, and as I drive, the temp. goes down.
It is the 2nd time I take it to the dealer. The first time, they said it had the wrong type of coolant in it, it was supposed to be a red coolant, but I dont think the color of the coolant matters and they charged me for it. Now, I have it in the dealer again..i wonder what they'll say this time. Has anyone else have had this problem??

calvin webb

kat:
i too own a 2007 cobalt and have yet to have any problems. as far as your coolant. its normal for your coolant temperature to rise when the vehicle is not moving. this is how a cooling system works. the water pump circulates the coolant through the engine. coolant passes through tubes in the radiator and the "fins" absorb the heat. the fins are cooled by the fan or moving air as you drive the vehicle. then the process starts over again. if the vehicle is not moving the heat in the fins can't go anywhere unitl the fan kicks in. as far as the wrong coolant. what should be in it is "dex cool" its a red/orange color. a 50/50 mix of coolant will protect against boil overs of roughly 256 degrees and won't freeze until -34 degrees. i would only worry if your coolant temp. gets to around 240 degrees. if the fan is working properly it should kick on to prevent overheating.

I have a 2007 Colbalt, never had any problems with it, take it regularly for maintenance and inspections just had it in for a recall. but in the last couple days every once in a while I am hearing a knocking noise..Ticking and ideas as to what it may be I also have the extended warranty so any repairs I am not worried about.

K

I have a 2005 Cobalt LS, leather seats, premium sound, etc. I can't figure out how any of you spent $20,000 on a Cobalt, I am not even sure I could have gotten the SS up that high. The key not coming out is an issue with a sensor in the shift console, it is not detecting that car in in park. I have 70,000 miles on my Cobalt no shimmy or shakes, got 60,000 out of the factory tires. Been in two accidents with the car and the front/side airbags never deployed. One was a deer on the front corner another was T-bone driver side both time I was fine and the car was ok to drive. I do have a knock now in the front right wheel well, going to look at struts when weather gets better, roads are rough where I live. Otherwise for the first 60,000 the car has been quite, smooth, tires all wore evenly. But you need to remember that the 2005 is different from other years, different motor, different factory tire (michelin energy mxv4 plus), etc. I have the 16 in alloy four lug rims. I also probably have tighter body panels and parts because the dies stamping them out where new, later years the fit will tend to be sloppy as the dies wear.

K

Your coolent should be red/orange and shouldn't have been messed with if the car is under 100,000 miles. I had an old potiac 6000 that would overheat easily and the issue was simply the ground for the fan was rusty so the fan was not kicking in, the issue was most noticable when at an idle.

Jay

I have a 2007 Cobalt that I bought at carmax. Had a clicking noise that the dealer couldent find. I found it. That damn plastic hubcap wasent installed right. It now has almost 60,000 and the only thing I've replaced is the tires. It would seem that in everyones comments that the airbags DON'T work at all. Personally anytime you wreck a car I would get rid of it. Ask any guy. Cars seem like women and they remember wrecks. Maintain then and they will take care of you. Screw up once and your done for. lol. I like my cobolt so far. Its been almost 3 years.

uis davila

the brake problem go after market that what stoped it for me got drilled and sloted and no sturing problem but i have a auto 06 start it up shifts good but after a lil it shifts hard any one have that problem

Rodrigo

I have 2006 cobalt lt and I've had it for 2 months. No problems so far. If your temp goes up past 210 it could be you left air conditioner compressor on but you don't have your ac actually on. Whenever you are not using your ac make sure you actually turn both knobs to the off position.0-4 put on 0 and the color red and blue (cold air hot air) put pointing up in between the red and blue . In my car this keeps the temperature down or just always keep your ac on low. That keeps my car at 190 to 200 because the fan stays on till you turn of ac.

chad sloan

i have a 2007 chevy coblat i bought brand new with 4 miles on it..its been in the shop cause the power steering went completely out and on all 4 tires the tread has completely seperated from the tire.2 in the front while doin 70 miles an hr on the atl bypass...we almost wrecked thankgod we survived..

Christina

Chad, there has been a recall for the steering on the cobalts. I havent gotten my letter yet though to get it fixed.

Kate

I have a 2006 Cobalt! I have millions of problems!

The steering wheel shakes bad when I break.

I have this annoying humming sound as soon as I hit 25mph and it just continues on and on.

The airbags randomly go on and off, both driver and passenger ones.

Please, if anyone has info on what I should do! EMAIL me at KateCzajka@live.com

Jim

Steering shaking and rattle from front drivers and passengers wheel area...I just had my control arm bushing and steering intermediate replaced today at a cost of $915...Most likely this caused me to prematurely have to have the struts replaced as well. There definately needs to be some more research into the issues being experienced with this car.

Lindy Jenkins

to comment to melissa Bricker i have a 2005 cobalt and i am having same issue as you are.. they said its my lower control arm bushing and left side stablizer link.. i am leasing this car and still paying on it yet.. it has given me sooo many problems.. radio locking up, battery not holding a charge, power steering ( which recently got fixed thru recall) no problems with that yet.. knock on wood... interior paint on door handles peeling off excessivly cutting my fingers, key stuck in ignition.. hesitates to start sometimes.. its becoming so frustrating and i have no warranty so its causing me headache after headache.. you can contact me @ unbreakable7676@yahoo.com.. i will help you in anyway that I can.. its a shame I dont understand how they can put these death traps out on the road

Tana

I have or should i say had a 2007 cobalt not many problems with it, had the fuel pump and power steering replaced bc of recalls i was just recently in a bad accident where a girl ran a red light and smashed the driver side front end up totalled my car i hit a cement block and my front airbag deployed i was wearing my seatbelt. My question is, when should side airbags deploy bc mine didnt, im not to sure if she just didnt hit me far enough on the side or if they were deffective u can email me at tanabeyer@sbcglobal.net

I have a 2005 Cobalt with only 33k miles on it...I have taken it to the GM dealership 4 times in the past 4 months...There is a large rumbling sound coming from the front of the car. They have no idea what it is. I've also taken it to other mechanics, they can't figure it out either. GM pretty much has given up on trying to figure it out. Has anyone else had this issue?? I've also had issues with the rear brakes 4 times also. They can't be properly fixed either. They keep squeaking.

kaylyn watkins

i own an 06 cobalt have had a lot of minor problems when it was first bought,as a gift to me from my momma.i had my first encounter in about Jan of 07 with the power steering it became hard to steer, and took it to the dealer and they could not duplicate the concern.I the had the pleasure of this happening 6 more times with no results, again dealer could not duplicate, along with the pulling over to shut the car off and then turning it back on then it would reset itself and drive ok but never quite right. From day one 1 nothing but problems.in march of this year the car lost power twice the first time i was trying to merge into another lane and it went almost all the way out and i hit the truck in front of me and and broke the tail light on the truck and damaged mine a little bit. a week later that week the steering went all the way out and i hit a tree head on and totaled the car and the air bags DID NOT DIPLOY!!!!!!!!! i have read so many complaints about this car it blows my mind!!!! i am hoping someone out there can help the rest of us who no longer have their cars due to crashes done by either the power assist modular or the steering column.PLease people be very careful when driving this car the power steering assist may have been "fixed or replaced"and you may still have a problem,i know of one person that this happened to and im sure there are more. And i might add that my car was on the recall list, unknown till 2 days after the crash. yes G.M. needs to own up buy back some replace others.give fair market value to the ones who have lost their car and much more to the one or ones who lost their lives because of this.if any one knows of a class action or individual law suit please let the rest of us cobalt owners know!! thank you if you want to comment on this e mail me we will talk KMARRIEW@gmail.com i live in the state of oregon and the weather didn't play a part in the problems,i heard there have been some problems occuring in some types of weather.WOW!!! i am going to the media with this problem! and hopes that others will do the same. this came to my attention via a lawyer. I pray everyone stayes safe, and maybe G.M. will do something for the rest of their customers.

kendra newberry

everyone who is here complaining needs to go to the NHSA web site and file a complaint there. they are the ones who will fight for this car to be taken off the road as it is a death trap trust me i own one and im going threw the same problems please go to the website and file your complaint there as they are the ones who caused gm to issue the recall that didnt fix our cars thanks

I HAVE A 08 COBALT SEDAN AND I HAVE HAD THE CONTROL ARM BUSHINGS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY AND I HAVE 49000 MILES AND THE CLUNKING IS BACK AND THESE WERE JUST REPLACED LAST WEDNESDAY. SERIOUSLY! THE CAR IS GREAT BUT THE NOISES ARE NOT. I HIT MY BREAKS AND THE STEARING WHEEL SHAKES AND BRAKES ARE GOOD. WTF SHOULD I JUST HAVE SOMEONE TAKE OVER THE LOAN LOL..OR WHAT

I had an 07 Chevy cobalt nothing but problems shaking bad while going 65 took it to get fixed wheel bearings and CC shaft. Then in an accident rear ended someone and airbags didn't deploy.

I have a 2006 Chevy Cobalt and had alot of problems with it but I fixed everything that went wrong with it. It's an easy car to work on. The Key getting stuck? Just take off the collar and replace the electric key lock plunger or just pull it out like i did. Also there's a little access door under your key area where you can release the key manually. Gas fumes/leaking - this car has a recall on the plastic gas inlet craking. I had the dealer do this because it was a pain in the a$$ trying to get the assembly off the tank, lock rings work too well. Overheat? This car runs normally between 189 to 225 degrees anything over that you need to worry. You could upgrade to a 2 core radiator, it's easy to replace from the (front) of the car. The shifter for auto trans, cheap plastic usually breaks, just replace or modify it where it doesn't use the button to shift... I did that. Clicking noise from front on hwy? Tighten the front splash guards. Vibration when braking? Worn rotors, replace easy to do, take wheel off remove brake caliper two bolts and the pull off the two retaining clips on lugs and presto! Vibration at 60 to 65 I'm working on this one. I hit a curb awhile back and I think it bent the cheapo aluminum rims these come with. Testing a couple of thing tonight, but i think I will just have to get a new rear passenger rim or possibly change the rear axel assembly... it looks very simple. Regarding the shaking issue at 60 to 65 mph. This is a tough one. I checked all rims by removing each wheel and putting on a spare to see if it still would shake and it did. I then jacked the car up and checked for a wobble on the tires. The passenger rear was slightly wobbling, so I replaced the rear axel piece of cake remove drum and 4 bolts... thats it. But it did not solve the problem. It's not the rims, it's not the tire balance, it's not the axel, it's not the front rotors (although this took care of the braking shuttering) soooo I believe that it has to be something wrong underneath with the tie rods/alignment. I checked the bushings and everything looks good. I think there is something that comes loose in the alignment. I'll check it out and report back.

Wes

Nothing! I found nothing wrong underneath the car. The only things I haven't tried is to replace the front axels and CV joints, but I am NOT going to do that. I didn't start having this problem until I got the new tires. 80,000 mile Uniroyals Touring tires. I'm going to get these Road Force tested at Discount this weekend to find out if these tires are defective. I'll let you know if this was the problem.

Have 2005 cobalt . Had shaking problem I found when I changed the front brake pads, it got worse even though the rotors looked fine. I got new pads and rotors that fixed alot. I also found my lower vertical control arm bushings were shot had roughly 4 inchs of play in tires. Did both front wheel bearings they were bad. Back drum brakes both had broken springs so replaced an I still need to do struts..oh and I had 1 recall for a steering issue..i have no idea why these cars were put on the road with such pathetic brake system....and control arm bushings ...but they are quick little things that can loose control from the c.a bushing and or brakes oh and that steering issue that I got a recall for.

I am sorry about that double post. I found the braking while at speed and car feels almost like its on ice patch ,pulls to 1 side was lower vertical control arm bushings. They were so worn I could barely tell they had rubber around they steele in the middle. I had jacked my front end up and with my hands could move the tires by tires I mean the strut tower control arm etc. a good 4 inchs foward and back. So in my car when stopping the whole wheel on 1 side was stoppin while the other side would stop inchs later due to bushing being worn. I had some small wobbls while braking I looked at rotors when I did new pads they looked good but wovble got worse with new pads.new rotors was fix on my car. Hope this helps. Also I did work myself I am not a certified mechanic.it only took a few hours to replace control arm bushings, found parts I think 13 or 15 $..a bushing.

It's the stupid new tires. I swapped the front tires to the rear and the problem has decreased significantly. It's still there but not as bad. I'm going to wear these tires out as soon as possible and then get Michelins. I had them on previously and they were excellent.

Wes

Had trouble starting the car this morning. It's a little chilly outside. When I got it to finally start it ran like caca... sputtering. It's the ignition control module part #12205719 for a 2006 cobalt 2.2L engine... just in case someone else runs into this problem.

Hey I ran into this forum again and yes! I found the answer to the vibration at 60 - 65 mph. It was the dam tires. I bought cheap tires from wal mart and they were the culprit. I bought some new nice michilen tires from Discount Auto and the vibration is gone Totally! I got the Michelin Defenders great tires for the price and perfect for the Cobalts.

Wes

Don't confuse braking vibration with tire vibration. When the vibration occurs when braking it's your front rotors. Easy to replace... email me if you need advice/help on your Cobalt.
