98,000 Chevrolet Cobalt Coupes Recalled

2005chevycobalt

GM is recalling more than 98,000 2005 – 06 Chevrolet Cobalt coupes to upgrade their side-impact protection. The recalled vehicles are ones not equipped with optional side-impact airbags, and potential harm is only to drivers or passengers not wearing seat belts.

There have been no injuries related to the recall. GM is having dealers install energy-absorbing plastic in the affected areas. Concerned Cobalt owners can call Chevrolet at (800) 630-2438 for more information.

there is probably a reason for it and i dont know it but, why didnt GM just make side-impact airbags standard?

Questions

Why are people in cars not wearing seatbelts? As you notice it only said drivers or passengers not wearing seatbelts. If we could just make the people wear seatbelts standard, then we wouldn't have these problems.

Paul

Remember, this is how you "beef" up a Cobalt....with "energy absorbing plastic".....

Didnt Lutz claim this car was far superior to the unlamented Cavalier?
Shows he doesnt know everything about his own cars.
Cobalt=glorified Cavalier

Paul,
Since this was an incident of people without safety belts on I'm betting a lot of other small cars won't pass the same test. A recent lawsuit against ford by people injured even though they weren't wearing safety belts probably led to the decision.

Graham

Paul: If you look in the doors of pretty much any current car you will find, yes, energy absorbing plastic. You will also find it between the bumper covers and metal armature behind the cover. The reason is simple: it absorbs energy rather well. Ever tried to crush a block of styrofoam?

Troy

I happy to know GM isn't afraid to correct a problem. Sure, maybe the "beef up" should have been added during the design phase but, nothing's perfect. KUDOS GM.

I have a 2007 chevy cobalt and I love it, it is sooo smooth riding and it's pretty cute too!

Troy

I agree on people should be wearing there seatbelts.. a law in most states. Now, if we could get thm to actually use there blinkers.. oh yeah.. they can't because they are talking on ther cell phones...

I OWN A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT AND HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT TROUBLE WITH IT. THIS WEEKEND IT CAUSED ME TO WRECK DUE TO THE DRIVE TRAIN BREAKING. IF ANYONE HAS HAD TROUBLE WITH THEIRS(ROTERS, BRAKES,TRANSMISSION,DRIVE TRAIN OR ELECTRICAL) PLEASE CONTACT ME

Kim Alexander

To comment on Melissa Bricker's problem. Yes! I am having prblems with my 2006 Chev. Cobalt. It shakes violently about 30 minutes after being on the highway. It shakes so badly that I think I am going to loose control of the car! I have to pull over to the side of the road and stop for awhile before getting back on the road. It will go for a few more miles and then starts all over again. It is getting very frustrating. The dealer cannot duplicate. They never drive it that long. I will email you. They need to take these cars off the road. They are a safety hazard!

To Milissa Bricker, I tried to email you and it would not go thru. Please email me at kimgalex@gmail.com I am interested in the class action lawsuit you are working on.

try checking the tires, maybe you have a bubble.

Don't whine when you only spend 10K on a new car, maintain your car properly and it won't have these problems.

new 2007 cobalt/junk/vibrates/$20,000 car/lt/dealer cant wont fix. I am interested in a lawsuit against these cheating dealers and company.

New cobalt with existing problem of vibration and humm at 65 mph plus. Been in the shop in excess of 7 times. Bradley chev in Franlin IN> says they do not know how to fix. GM says tough luck. this is a brand new &20,000 cobalt. If you want one of these, please drive it first to verify it is ok. This car has hankook tires????
Hope you cobalt owners have better luck than me.

My son had a 07 cobalt. He had a front end colision in Dec. 07. Jan 31, 08 he had a side colision that resulted in his death. The air bags did not deploy in either wreck. I couldn't get a lawyer to touch it. Anyone hearing these kinds of things?

Ed Wescott

We own an 05 Cobalt since new. It has been well maintained at the dealership and has only 27K miles on it. The tires have less than 7K miles on them. This car has had "the shakes" really bad four times in three years.
Yesterday it started shaking while I was doing 75 MPH on I-95. I was in four lanes of traffic and I could not slow down or pull over.
No place to go.
It goes into the dealer tomorrow.
It looks like GM has a common problem here.
Anybody have any luck getting it fixed?
We have an extended warranty.
If they can't fix it we will trade it in.
It scared me that bad.
BEWARE

I have a 2007 Cobalt ,I have put on 25000 miles in10 months. This car has not given me a single problem. All cars need to be maintained( air pressure, oil, etc. If your car has problems and still under warranty take it to the dealer or a different dealer if you dont get results. Do not give up keep on them to fix it right or start sending emails to GM, someone will wake up and help.

i had a car rental which was a chevy cobalt and yesterday morning while on the highway.....someone put his blinker on to come into my lane, (not looking of course) and as he came into my lane, i swerved out of the way (this was the lane next to the breakdown lane). my steering wheel acted as if it were on ice. as i tried to regain control and steer back, the car went into a life of its own.....spinning in a 360 circle so fast, i knew i was going to be killed. i was praying dear God. i was spinning and spinning across the whole highway.......i luckily ended up with a small car hitting my passenger side as i sat sideways facing the highway half in the high speed lane and half on the grass.

i am so lucky to be alive, but i just know that shouldn't have happened. i think something is wrong with the car. my airbags did not deploy either.

Cheryl

I was driving my car when I rear-ended a car travelling almost 20 miles an hour slower than me (it was not my fault according to the police report, they pulled out in front of me.) My car came to almost a dead stop.

The airbags never deployed.

The whole front end of my car is almost entirely gone.

Daughters (16 and 13) wrecked in an 2006 Cobalt (totaled) June 20, 2008. Total loss of steering control at 65 mph. Flipped at least twice, came to rest upside down. Thank God they are ok. Blessed to be alive. Sorry for your loss Bob. Also you guys hoping the dealer will fix it...good luck!. Steering problems? Do yourself a favor, trade it to a dealer. Let them be responsible for unloading junk to someone else.

John

Quick question to anybody I'm renting a 07 Cobalt where's the switch for the blinkers?????

I purchased a 07 Cobalt 2 months ago it had the "shakes" on the highway going 60-65 mph as well as slight humm while driving around 35 mph. i took it back to the dealer demanded 4 new tires and got them put on and haven't had a problem since.before going as far as a law suit try a set of new tires! just remember there is good and bad in any vehicle you buy Ford, Dodge . just keep it well maintained air pressure, oil changes etc and enjoy a long car life!!

Anyone driving a Cobalt or allowing one of there loved ones to drive it, need;s to have plenty good kharma and lot's of prayers for this car is a accident waiting to happen,Randy 30yr mechanic

I drive a Pacifica and got re-ended on Saturday. The other person's insurance only gave me a Cobalt for a rental car, which I think I commented to the rental car company it kind of feels like a death trap and I didn't feel safe driving it, but it was the only car they had on the lot. So driving home from work today, I was going completely straight and the car began to fish tale when I lightly touched my brakes. Even when I let off of them, I had no contorl over the steering... luckily I went off the right side of the road and not into oncoming traffic. Unluckily I the front end hit the only fire hydrant in miles. A ton of damage for an impact speed of 5 to 10 mph. Airbags did not deploy.

almost 2 years ago i slid on a patch of ice going down a hill in my cobalt and hit a telephone pole on the passenger side going about 20mph. totaled. airbags did not go off, but it was a side impact so i did not think much of it.

a couple days ago my friend was driving and didnt see brake lights in front of her. in her cobalt going around 35 mph. her airbags didnt go off either.

i was curious to see if there were other people with similar situations. these cobalts are very cheaply made and designed. glad to be driving a Honda Ridgeline now.

I bought my daughter a 2005 Cobalt, has new tires, gets the shakes bad about every 2000 miles, have to pull over to make it stop. Chev dealership could find nothing wrong. Now the brake lights are staying on sometimes and today she said she was driving and it just started slowing down on its own and said it was out of gas, turned car off and restarted and it was fine. Need help, anyone know what is going on.

Samantha

Have had my Cobalt about 2 years now no problems until this week. The Antifreeze is going somewhere it isn't leaking out on the ground it isn't in the oil, and it isn't leaking inside the car. Was wandering if anyone else was having this problem.
If so Email me please

I have a 2006 Cobalt. I got the car for my 18th B-day months later my key keeps getting stuck in my steering wheel, and sometimes it doesn't start...What kind of BS is that, new car but its having crappy problems already..

John

2007 Chevy Cobalt with 18k had a knocking noise in the front end. Turned out to be control arm bushings worn so bad the control arms banged on the frame. They put new ones on under warrantee. Now the front end is so tight. I'm afraid when I go over a pebble that somethings going to break. I too have been a mechanic for 30 plus years. I have a hum in my drive train as well as air noise comming in around the winshield and doors while driving on the highway... Little car has to go... its a junk. too bad I get 35mpg

Robert

2007 cobalt control arms replaced ($350) new goodyear tires ($300) new breaks ($70) now it has vibration around 65-80 mph and awful noise from the tires when coming to a slow stop. any idea, anyone?

On the way to a funeral Friday 6/26/09 my 2005 Chevy cobalt was in an accident. My car is totaled. The air bags never deployed. My husband ended up with whiplash, I bumped my head and bruised my leg really bad. My son in the back seat hurt is arm and leg. Is there some sort of law suit against the manufacturer about the air bags not deploying. If so will someone let me know. Thanks

Linda

My son died in a single car accident, I believe it to be due to the power
steering going out in this car 2006 Cobalt. I would appreciate any information you have
gathered if you are willing to share. Please email me if you have lost a family member in the a one car accident in 2006 Cobalt. I am working on a class action lawsuit if there are other similar cases. If not they should take this car off the road. It is a death trap. Thanks! Linda

We bought a used 2009 Cobalt with about 30,000 miles on it. It drives fine at up to about 60 mph. At 65 mph it gets a fairly loud "rumble strip" noise somewhere in the car. Dealer has replaced right and left hub bearings, rotors and pads, balanced the front 17" aluminum wheels/Pirelli tires. Still gets that noise at 65 mph. Anyone have this, and if so how did you get rid of it? Thanks!

James

I also had the knocking that occurred when I shifted into 1st & 2nd gear and when I went over road bumps. 2007 Cobalt LS, just hit 24k. Turned out to be the control arm bushings. Replaced for free under warranty. Dealership said it was probably due to the horrendous pot holes that my city sees, which I admit to have landed in several times.

ashley

I have a 2007 chevy cobalt. I have had nothing but problems with it since i bought it. I was in a bad wreck and none of my air bags deployed. My brakes, rotars, and some other things have been giving me major problems. If anyone has been experiencing the same problems please let me know. I am scared to drive my car lately, i was just wondering if anyone has had the same problems?? thanks.

Megan

I have put 47K miles on my 07 Cobalt, but I have had many more problems than I should have with a "new" car.

1. The rumbling/shaking noise around 50mph comes and goes. I have replaced the brakes and rotors, and it still happens. It's quite scary because the steering wheel actually vibrates pretty hard!

2. At 36,000 miles, my car FAILED it's annual inspection and I had to replace both struts in the front because they were broken and leaking (oil?).

3. If it is raining or snowing my car loves to fishtail in circles when I apply the brakes. It's actually very similar to a rear-wheel drive car.

4. And finally now at 47,000 miles, it was towed into the shop this evening because it wouldn't start today. The battery is fine and it has gas, etc. The AAA mechanic could find NOTHING wrong with it.

It's been a long 2 year relationship and this car is paid off, but I wonder if it's time for an upgrade!?!

I also think it's fightening that everyone on this site is having very similar problems. What can we do?

Elva

You can buy a Cobalt. They are good cars, until, problems start. The electronic power steering is dangerous.I suppose thats why there are gag orders .To keep everyone from knowing the truth.Buyer Beware.

kel

I HAD a 2007 Chevy Cobalt LS. Rear ended someone HEAD ON and HARD- air bags did not deploy-car is totaled.
I WAS wearing my seatbelt...but because the air bags did NOT deploy the cops did not belive me. Finally they belived me...I sent an email to GM yesterday and they called me back today leaving a message to call them back. Im hoping to get some cash from them :) who knows ... I might be lucky!!

jessica

well i have a 2005 cobalt, it has been to the shop several times for warranty issues at 35000 miles struts went bad, and a few other things. Now i have a rumbling, bouncing feeling in the front end when i drive it. The tires are new, any ideas? jltiglio@gmail.com

timmy

I just got the 2007 cobalt a couple years ago and its been running fine but just recently at around 35,000 miles the engine just started making a clicking sound and just last night a couple days later i parked it for a couple hours, and when i tried to crank it up it'll idle like normal for about a half a second then cut off and send smoke out of the tail pipe that smells like oil treated gas or something. The dealer i got the car from is in another state and i don't have the money to put it in the shop any ideas of what it could be.

Paul

Cobalt= a polished Cavalier.
No matter what platform they build the car on,or what engine they use (Ecotec),GM builds horrible compact cars...always has.Skylark,Citation,Phoenix,Omega,Achieva,Grand AM,Corsica,Beretta...and they have among the worst crash test outcome of any car.GMs planned Cobalt replacement (Spark?)probably wont be a whole lot better either.

Mahogany

I was hit by a drunk driver 10/10/09. I drive a 2005 Chevy Cobalt, the airbags did not deploy and as a result of that burst my nose and lip. My knee is messed up. THe car is totaled. Don't know what to do. This was the second accident front end and no airbag deployment.

Megan Seymour

I have a 07 Chevy Cobalt LS Coupe.
I am having multiple problems with mine, (in order) such as-
1. power steering went out while I was driving!
2. airbags not deploying.
3. headlights won't work on auto.
4. it uses as much gas as an diesel truck!

I thought it was my fuses at first but none of them are blown. I'm seriously interested in a lawsuit against GM!
