American-Made Index Updated

2007fordf150_1

One of the most talked about features Cars.com has created in recent years is the American-Made Index. Twice a year, Kelsey Mays analyzes every new car sold and breaks down sales figures, where the car’s parts are made and where it’s assembled to determine which one is most “American-Made.” This time out, the top two vehicles are an interesting dichotomy of today’s car business.

The Ford F-150 pickup is still No. 1 while the Toyota Camry is No. 2. Surprised? Toyota is one of many import brands to have U.S.-based assembly plants, and there’s a second Toyota on the list as well. See where other cars landed on the American-Made Index here.

Toyota Troll

Not surprised. Toyota is America's car company.

Tor

Not surprised, but I am surprised by this:

Why would a rational consumer trying to cut through all the marketing mumbo-jumbo care?

Buy the best car. Do you think you do the made-in-US car (or more likely truck) a favor by buying an inferior product simply because it is made in the USA? Sure it helps in the short-term (more sales), but long-term the only way for US manufacturers to compete is by offering superior product. What better way of giving them an incentive to improve than by avoiding blatant marketing ploys - like this index.

If the US automaker get this idea, I don't believe I would see the 08 Focus at the Detroit Autoshow like the way it is now.

Like I've said in another comment, it is still a COSMETIC SURGERY on the old model after 7 good'ol years for Christ sake.

ermatthe

regardless of where the camry is made, toyota still puts a fraction of the money into the american economy that ford and/or gm do.

you realize that most of that money goes to executive pay and little of that money goes to the workers.

JACK

Only poor people buy Ford-GM-Chrysler products. Those who care about quality and have money to spend always buy the best. In most cases it'll be a Honda or Toyota product.

IN THE BOX

id exclude GM from this one, ford sells to high risk credit people and dodge is just desperate.

there was not one Dodge or other Chrysler product on the list.

Car guy

Jack - you are in idiot.

Benson

At first I thought Jack's comment was off base then after giving it some thought I think he is right. I gladly paid the additional $2500 to purchase my Accord over a Fusion. It was worth every single cent.

American car buyers buy on price not quality.

"...Those who care about quality and have money to spend always buy the best. In most cases it'll be a Honda or Toyota"

Really? Where I live, Seattle, it is more likely to be Audi or BMW.

BTW: Toyota had more recalls last year than it sold cars.

Just so many myths based on the past.

"BTW: Toyota had more recalls last year than it sold cars."
Sorry,
That's completely inaccurate.
