Mitsubishi Readies Lancer Evolution Concept for Detroit Auto Show

Prototypex1

We were pretty excited about the new Lancer when we caught a glimpse of it earlier this week. The economy sedan should be a big seller for the company, but the enthusiast draw to the Lancer line is the high-performance Lancer Evolution, or Evo. Today Mitsubishi revealed that along with displaying the new Lancer at the Detroit auto show next month, it will also show a “Prototype X” concept that will serve as the basis for the next Evo.

These sketches show an extremely lowered stance and an odd trio of hood scoops. We always liked the large singular scoop hood duct of the current Evo, but these are just sketches of a concept that could change before it ever reaches production. Hopefully we’ll hear all about the engine and other performance goodies of the next Evo at the Mitsubishi press conference Jan. 8.

Why are all the trunklids today getting so shallow? This lid looks less than 12" front to back. How can this have any trunk space? I betcha my 2000 Mirage has a bigger trunk than this. You would think manufacturers would be more concerned with rear impacts now, with all the media attention on Crown Vic police cruiser fires....but with almost no rear overhang now on almost every car,its going to becoming a far bigger issue.

Paul,
the big difference these days are the fold down seats in almost every new car. So while the trunk space may be slightly lower (and we don't have the new numbers to check) there is more overall cargo room. And all cars these days are designed to protect the fuel tank or else we'd hear a lot more stories than just the crown vic which had a unique flawed design.

sum dude

I see a bit of influence from the Acura Integra in the shape and style of the tail-lights.

"We always liked the large singular scoop of the current Evo"

Excuse me, where is the scoop located on the current Evo?? Are we talking about the WRX?

How could Dave have been thinking of the scoop on the WRX (or STI) if he says he liked it?

I really love the sketches, but I doubt the real thing will look that good. I'm afraid the Lancer's sleek new look will tempt the Evo designers to set a new benchmark for garishness.

this looks like circa 1980s trash...next design please! (and alittle refinement and style to go with it)

Would look great in a high school parking lot.

I would rather buy a mazda6 and soup it up.

this evo 10 is trash!!!!!

No real improvements have been made. Ya, it has the ayc blah blah blah.... ITS A RALLY CAAARRR!!!!!!!!

no need for more traction and bs.

Does this really look like a rally car??
