Apocalypse 2030: Day-Long Rush Hour for NYC

Nyctraffic

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and a panel of experts announced today that by 2030 New York City will be so overpopulated that the infrastructure won’t be able to supply enough electricity or housing for its residents. To add insult to injury, bumper-to-bumper rush-hour traffic will last all day long.

Not only would car traffic be abysmal, mass transit would also be stretched beyond its current limits. One of the panel’s suggestions — called congestion pricing — would tax vehicles going to Manhattan’s most heavily trafficked areas. We have no idea how that would work — tolls? — but there isn’t a lot of room to build new roads in the city. Does anyone else have a better idea? Perhaps employers in NYC will have to allow more telecommuting.

If you want to know how congestion charging works (or, depending on your point of view, doesn't work), look at London. They've had it for a couple of years.

big deal. i am from new york and they have been saying that for decades and nothing happens. people will drive the chevy aveo/honda fit or the coming h4/toyota rav4. not many toyota tundras and many gmc canyons.

don't worry about it.

I am from NY.
I don't think population in NY will grow by 1 million in 2030.
They just want to justify toll booths in Manhattan in the near future.

Better mass transit, tolls and tunnels all have potential....the west side of manhatten needs a tunnel type expressway...

If they still haven't done anything since the 2003 blackout, who is the one to be blamed instead of the drivers?

I thought NYC had one of the best mass transit systems in the US. Why does anyone need a car in New York City? Can't you take the train anywhere you need to go? They should ban all cars from NYC, that'd get rid of the traffic. Make everyone take the train or walk if they need to go somewhere. Lay tracks on some of the old roads and run trains on the surface to double the rail lines, since there won't be any cars anymore aside from the police, fire and ambulances, and maybe a few taxis. (since everybody's taking the train, cabs aren't likely to be all that necessary anymore) Pollution in the city will drop, the people will be healthier from the increased exercise, they'll have more money since they won't be spending it on parking and insurance, there's not a single downside except for that whole personal freedom bit, but this is America, we don't need that anymore.
