2006 L.A. Auto Show: Land Rover LR2 Price Announced
We already saw the LR2 when it debuted in Europe earlier this year, but the exciting thing here in L.A. was not only seeing it in person, but hearing there was a price tag attached. When we say price — singular — we mean price. The LR2 will come standard with almost every goodie – leather seats, a two-part panoramic sunroof and a six-disc Alpine stereo — for $34,700. The only add-ons are a technology package with navigation for $3,400, a cold-weather package with heated seats for $400, and a lighting package with bi-xenon headlights for $1,050.
The price is perfectly aimed at the Acura RDX, which starts at $32,995, and the BMW X3, which starts at $38,000.
Up close, the LR2 is extremely luxurious inside with leather everywhere, including the doors. The rear cargo area seemed too high off the ground, but otherwise it was an impressive package for the price.

It's amazing what you can do to a Ford Escape...charge 40k for it, and get away with it.
Those Fordies really know how to drive a company into the ground. I smell $8,000 rebates in the air...
the freelander (LR2) is not based on the Escape. Just because Ford owns LR does not mean all LR's are based on Ford platforms. LR is not Lincoln...yet. For example, the Range Rover is NOT an expensive Explorer.
As for the monkier LR2....why do all luxury brands play this letter-mumbo-jumbo game? Just because BMW, Lexus, Audi and MB did it? At least LR2 and LR3 makes sense (especially compared to Lincoln's letter soup - does MXX exist or was it MXK?).
What was wrong with the brand equity in Discovery or Freelander (this one in Europe)?
Actually, the LR2's architecture is within the Volvo S40/V50/C30/C70, Mazda 3/5, and European Ford Focus family of chassis. The Tribute/Escape pair are a separate, Mazda developed platform. Yes, Ford is making some money on the vehicle, but it is a business. American manufacturers are finally getting a handle on platform sharing without a Taurus and a Sable looking identical other than a different grille.
The auto industry has condensed to such a point that buying a Volvo no longer means buying a Volvo. You're buying the idea of a Volvo along with engineering ideas from Sweden and the US, Dutch manufacturing labor, and globally manufactured components. A true brand no longer exists, except for perhaps Ferrari, and I'd bet there is at least a hint of Fiat in their dashboards and engine management systems.
I see the resemblence to the escape but also to the Land Rover line overall. NOW more importantly the parts this borrows from the S40/Mazda 3 aren't what drivers will notice anyway.
Look inside this sucker and it is the nicest small SUV I've yet to see. It is very "premium" and IMO much nicer than the X3. The problem is really the small amount of cargo room. But it's really nice and the price is not bad. Heck we directly compared it to the Acura and the X3 in the post and its right where it should be. This will probably sell extremely well.
Dave, You're forgetting Land Rover's "legendary" reliability.
LT,
Well it is British after all you're right. Although the Range Rover Sport did not encounter the amount of problems as the LR3 so hopefully they're getting better with each new model. The plant where this is being built won a JD Power quality award, according to LR, i didn't double check.
