GM Reveals Next Chevy Malibu Interior
In an odd early-look, GM has released this image of the next-generation Chevy Malibu’s interior. The new mid-size sedan won’t make its public debut until the Detroit auto show in January, but the company is eager to show off what seems to be a much-improved interior with a two-tone color scheme. We say it seems much improved because this is just one image and we will withhold judgment until we see the car in person. However, we have tested a number of GM’s newest products, like the Chevy Tahoe and the Saturn Outlook, and they definitely show a marked improvement over previous interiors, which left a lot to be desired.

toyota be scared!
I don't think Toyota has anything to worry about with the Malibu especially since it competes size wise with the Camry. Chevy needs to work on reliability, fuel economy and refinement. Not interiors. You can't judge a car by it's interior.
Yep. But GM interiors pretty much suck. Too bad Toyota's are boring.
Pretty pathetic when a car company is so desperate to change their image that they release an early picture of a new interior. Considering the old interior, and the car as a whole, was a real p.o.s. naturally things can only be improved.
These days I don't know what is more of a joke, GM or Ford. One thing is for sure, it's real damn close.
The Malibu is already reliable and gets good fuel economy. What are you people talking about?
Also, how does this pic mean GM is "desperate"? They are just building anticipation for the Detroit show and there is nothing wrong with that.
GM interiors "suck"? What about the SRX, Full size SUVs, pickups, XLR, Lucerne, etc.? Those interiors suck? please.
While the current Malibu is nothing great, this will be a complete redesign. Not much from the old will be brought over. It will most resemble the new Saturn Aura. Although we found the Aura's interior not up to snuff compared to the new Outlook. This will still be a huge upgrade and the exterior will turn a lot more heads I'm sure. Also I believe the Malibu has done well in recent quality and satisfaction ratings.
Everytime I read these comments it just amazes me how many brainwashed people there are. Anytime ANYTHING is posted about an american car company people start going off about how they (american) are a POS. While that may have been true in the 80's and into the 90's it certainly is not true now. Toyota, Honda, Nissan, etc. are no better now than the american car companys. And, yes I have owed both foreign and domestic.
So, a new interior for the Malibu. GM is fully capable of building fine cars, but just like Sadam's old army, they need to get rid of the upper levels of management. Come on, Wagoner get's 16 mil a year for this? Camaro show car, rushed overnight so he would have something to counter Chrysler (upper level engineer from warren tech center told me about that).
Money could be better spent on product development than on exec salary!
Good point about GM/Ford/Chrysler executive salaries. The top executives of Toyota and Honda only make a fraction of what the domestic execs make. Gotta wonder how they justify their huge salaries when their companies are in such trouble. At least Bill Ford had the decency to refuse his pay for a while, but I'm sure he was still well-compensated in other ways.
Dave T. I disagree. Simply look at the 2007 Car of the Year. The Camry. I guess the experts are brainwashed too.
I don't think Dave suggested the new Malibu is a Camry killer; he's saying it looks like a nice car. The Camry became Motor Trend's car of the year for good reason, but that doesn't somehow mean everyone else can only make unreliable junk. That's the belief that Ron was referring to as being “brainwashed.”
Good, it's nice to see GM apply some style to the interiors.
When I did a comparison test drive against several vehicles, I found that GM vehicles overall lacked refinement on the inside. I drove a Chevy Cobalt, for instance, and the interior left a LOT to be desired. Not much of a shock, the sister vehicles for the Cobalt were not much better.
The new Honda Civic, on the other hand, features a well rounded interior with many options for a cheap price. Ditto for the 2007 Toyota Camry.
Leave it to all of you who constantly bash America.. Wow, where is your priorities, is it to bash anything that is made in America.
Toyota has won out in the advertisement department. They have everyone believeing their vehicles are the best.
Keep reading their sales pamplets such as any of the major auto magazines.
You complain aboout what the American auto executives make.
Keep buying foriegn vehicles and you will be making what the hourly worker Korean is making, then you will say< I wish I had loved my country more and supported my fellow American. Then you will say I might still be making good wages in America. Instead you will be making foreign wages in America.
Waaaa, Waaaa, Waaaa, cry the 'How dare you buy a Japanese auto crowd'. My family supports America. Our MB was built in SC and our Honda in OH. Enjoy your Canadian Ford or your Mexican made GM auto. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it.
Yes, I guess the people that buy GM are just idiots. We live in the US and like to support our friends, neighbors and US based companies. We are jerks that like to see our local GM engine plant survive. We like to see profits stay in the US to improve products. I am stupid because I own a 3 yr old Buick that has had zero problems. Just keep buying foreign based products and send GM and Ford into destruction. Won't it be great that everyone drives cars where the company's headquarters are out of the country! I'm glad that we have so many supporters of this country out there. And please make sure you stick a American Flag on your Toyota's back window so you can feel good about yourself and sleep at night.
Interesting how dolts will go out of their way to confirm the opinion of 'Jordan'. Then again GM & Ford still have customers, right?
This looks promising. I think if the outside follows suit, but does not simply clone the Aura, Chevy will have a fine car. The current Malibu is a capable car (reading Motortrend, Road and Track, Car and Driver comparisons), but it's a little boring to drive and a little on the homely side...
GM is making good cars. GM cars are moving up in the reliability rankings. GM's pushrod engines get a bad rap, but the smaller and lighter than OHC, develop decent power (every car doesn't need 300hp, remember when a Chevy smallblock barely broke 200hp?), and very good fuel economy. Now some of them have VVT and cylinder deactivation. What's not to like? Now if they could just add a gear or two to their transmissions...
I know, the domestics have their past to overcome. Hyundai and Kia did it, and so can the Big 3.
In regard to Jordan's comment about Canadian made Ford vehicles: I hope you realize how important Canada is in the American economy. Firstly, without Canada the price of fuel for your Honda or Mercedes would likley be much higher. Secondly we are very closely tied to your economy, without us your existence would be much more difficult. Don't forget how many of the 30 million Canadians drive a Ford, Dodge, or GM vehicle.
I fully support America! No question about that. I do however refuse to throw my money away on a vehicle that is subpar to the competition. Sit in the Malibu for an hour in both city/highway driving. Then, sit in a Civic or Camry (built in America) in the same driving situations and you will see that the Malibu or other similar priced GM feels unrefined. The engines sound harsh, acceleration is peaky, interiors designed in the 80's, cheapness used where it shoudn't be.... lower fuel economy, resale value..... Can I be considered un-american for being smart with my money? The Big Three
American companies have difficulty competing with the foreign companies because they have huge payments to make supporting agreements forced on them in the past by the unions. All domestics are burdoned by these costs whereas the foreign companies are not. This results in American cars lacking in the refinements often found in foreign cars. Yet somehow, American cars are the domminant ones at all the old car shows anywhere around the country. Go figure!
I have had both and have found my GM, Ford and Dodge vehicles just as competent as my Toyota.
Al,
How many new American Cars do you see at these car shows? Very Few. People cherish the old ones becasue they were built right. IMO they need to get back to building the cars people craved like they did in the Muscle years. Of course, I'm not saying bring back the gas guzzlers, there are plenty of Gigantic SUV's with one occupant to fill that bill. Instead, bring in some innovation, fuel economy, up to date styling and refinement. In short....Lead, Follow or get out of the way!
Please not all american cars are crap now a days I work at a car rental agency and see all types of american and forgeign cars and overall GM is probably the more performance-savy and even reliability has gone up a plenty for the american companies. Look at stats, GM has plenty of 30+ MPG cars now as Ford is getting some too. GM is definelty starting to take some steps i nthe right direction
Evertime American car company unveil new model, most auto writer comment's, their interior is made of cheap plastic. Does anybody from Ford , GM and Chyrsler listen ?
well chrysler doesn't but GM's interiors are far more superior than a ford...so lets not assume the "american companies" are all the same because they are not anymore. And why are you so concerned about automotive writer's comments Al, why don't you form your own opinion because automotive writers tend to discriminate against american companies. The new malibu has a great interior, but will never get the credit it deserves, which is why the companies battle bad public perception.
I feel foreign car companies are building good cars.. But The big 3 ( GM IS KICKING ASS REAL QUICK ) are coming back with a vengence... Look how the differences are from a mere 2 years ago. The new escalade, acadia, outlook, aura plus other new models popping up every other 4 weeks... Remember you have to realize it takes time to weed out bad product. I am not saying the big three did not screw up, but it takes time to stop the bleeding. Since i was nineteen i have owned 22 american made cars that have never let me down. A corporation tends to have the vision of the one who runs it.. it is unfortunate but it happens. As far as feul goes wake up you bunch of pussies sooner or later fuel would have gone up anyway. As far as american made vehicles remember the foundation of this country... GM, Ford were here in the begining they made "MADE IN AMERICA" what it is today.Just because it is built here does not mean it is american made. On top of it remember World War II. Who was it that bombed us? Oh yeah JAPAN!!!!!!
Hyundai, Toyota, Honda all have plants in America and employ Americans. Foreign companies are more responsible (Asian Stereotype) with their designs. America is run by CEO's with their wallets as a priority. GREEDY AMERICAN CEO's want what is best for them and piss on everyone else. Buy an H2 or another gas guzzling monster and kill the environment who cares as long as the CEO's make huge profits. Oh yeah notice that all rental cars are "American-made" cars. Do you want to buy a car that looks like a rental? Also take note people with bad credit drive Chevy's, GM's and Saturns.
chevy, GM and saturn all fall under the brand GENERAL MOTORS, so its kinda redundant...but anyway i think we all know ford is the one putting bad credit on the road, or KIA. But lets not be that discriminatory THANKS
the new malibu is AWESOME! you have to see this in person!
The fact that GM, Ford and Chrysler have lost market share and continue to lose market share, indicates to me that more people have or are switching to foreign brands. There is hope for the domestic brands: they can try to convince the youngest generation that their products are worth looking at when they are ready to buy their first new vehicle. The downside is that once a person has owned a foreign brand, it is unlikely that they will ever switch back to what the domestics have to offer. It is going to take a whole lot more than nice interiors and fancy paint jobs to woo future customers. It is going to take reliability and value, and that is something that the domestics have not had for the past three decades. Buying foreign is buying better, and people want better for their money.
Wake up. Toyota and Honda, although some are made in America are not American cars. Here's why. To be an American car it has to be made in America, by an American worker, working for an American company. If one of the three isn't there, it's not American. Toyota & Honda are great cars. I don't deny it. I would only ask that when it comes to a purchase of a new car people at least consider all the options then make an informed decision. Not just automatically discarding Chevy/Ford, etc because 20 years ago they or someone they knew had one that was a piece of shit. Be open to the possibility that American cars might have gotten better.
Much like Saturn and damn good. It even looks a bit like the interior of the new 2008 Accord from Honda.
I had a 2002 Chevy Impala. Ran perfectly. Sold it just before 100,000 miles because I got a new job, and wanted a new car..lol. Anyway, I got the Saturn Aura. I LOVE IT. Seriously, American cars are back. And I am very happy to buy American. My dad has a Mercedes E320. At 50,000 miles, the electrical system went bad. Would have cost my dad 3000 dollars if he didn't yell at the Mercedes people..lol.
waa waa waa Tooting the horn some foreign car companies assemble their cars in America. Whooped de do. Still sends the profits back to where ever. The Big 3 still make American made cars, but they would build more if Americans quit sucking Toyota, Honda and who ever else butt. This Malibu is kicks ass and gives something totally comparable to the Camry and it is made by an American Company in Kansas City, Kansas. Wow what a concept with this car recycling the US dollar instead of sending profits and dollars out of country. Such a novel idea. Of course the import loves will find some excuse to keep sending the buck aboard~
I love your blog very much, more more info, I will concern it again!
