Ford Edge, Lincoln MKX Delayed

Edgedelays

In an unexpected move, Ford is delaying the launch of its most anticipated model of the year, the Edge SUV, along with its Lincoln sibling, the MKX, by two weeks. The move is meant to give more time to ensure proper assembly and manufacturing of the all-new vehicles at the Canadian plant where they’re built. Dealers were expecting the two models to arrive by the end of this month; instead they’ll be waiting until mid-December for delivery.

There are two ways to look at the move. In the short run it hurts Ford, which is in need of more hot products; the Edge looks to be a strong seller, like the Fusion sedan. In the long run, taking time to tackle quality control before the product hits those influential first adapters — folks who always want to be the first on the block with the latest and greatest — who can make or break a new product is extremely important.

Hopefully, Ford fixes all it needs to fix and the Edge follows the Fusion’s route as a reliable product.

Gee, what a surprise, delayed for quality issues. No one in their right mind would be the first to buy one of these. My family got burned by Ford twice and both times it was because we were 'early adopters'. A 1996 Ford Taurus and 2002 Ford Explorer were the worst auto purchasing mistakes I ever made.

I really like Ford's new motto: "Bold Moves"
I agree it is a 'bold move' to buy a Ford product. And here I thought they could never one up the 'Quality is Job 1' b.s.

Gotta love that Ford...errrr Canadian car you got there...what a joke.

well the Fusion has done very well with initial quality even with the first year. I think they're trying to avoid a repeat of the purchases you made. End of year sales won't help their bottom line as much as positive word of mouth either.

Hey Ford, bring back the Pinto. Maybe by now you have fixed all the defects it once had. Suggested new sloagan for Ford "Somebody Please Buy Our Cars....Please".

Thank goodness Ford had the sense to delay introduction until they get the bugs worked out. Too many times in the past automakers rushed new cars to market and then use the public to "beta" test them and identify problems that need to be fixed. With Ford in a precarious position they need to be extra careful to do it right, any flopped product launch could finish them off once and for all. I'm not a Ford fan (other than the Mustang), but I applaud management's decision to do the right thing.

Given Ford's reputation, I think its best that the company takes all the time it needs to get these products right and regain their competitive edge.
