Compact SUV Faceoff Tests CR-V, RAV4, Outlander

Compactsuvs

Mike Hanley and I pitted three of the most popular new or redesigned compact SUVs on the market against each other to see which rules this competitive segment. We were both a bit surprised at the results and how one vehicle could be so good in one department but fail in the others. Check out the full faceoff, complete with video and the eventual winner.

its bout time the little guy wins for a chance, usually car reviewers are discriminate with public perception, so I was sure that Honda or Toyota would wins, since they make "such great cars...." but the mitsu actually had some ground...

Yea... despite owning a 2006 RAV4, I will have to admit that the new outlander has quite a "wow" factor.

After test driving all of the above 2x in addition to the Hyundai Tucson it was clear to us that the two best autos in this catagory were the RAV4 and the CRV. We ended up purchasing the CRV because the dealer experience was by far the best of the four. As far as the Mitsu goes we wouldn't buy one even if they tossed in a hefty rebate. The two models we drove at two different dealerships were so poorly put together that it was embarassing. Gaps everywhere inside and out. And we too noticed the loud clunk of the transmission on both test drives. With cars being so expensive these days we would be hard pressed to gamble on a Mitsu product.

Barry,
the interior is clearly where Mitsubishi lost the contest. If it had measured up to the RAV4 it would have probably won. Your reasons for buying the CR-V are extremely valid because there are many other factors consumers must decide on besides our testing criteria.

One does have to wonder if Mitsubishi will survive in this country. They darn well better make these Outlanders good or they're finished.

Odd, our 2006 Outlander is superbly assembled. I'm surprised that wouldn't be the same for the new 2007 model. I didn't want the new one. I preferred the 4-cylinder and manual transmission available in the prior model.

I bought a brand new 2006 CR-V last Jan. and i have to admit that its the worst car ever. Noise inside the car, i had to take the car 4 times to the dealer and they were not able to fix the problem. They took apart the dashboard 4 times but the noise is still present.Even my 12 year old Dodge Intrepid is quiter than the CR-V.
I do not know what to do now because i want to change the car but i am not sure what to buy. So much for a honda. Worst car ever. From your reviews it seems that all cars have some adv.&dis. but for the price and the exp. i think honda is the worst.I see that the RAV4 has a transmission problem???? Mits. i never liked....it seems that i am going to have to move up for a lexus or something else...very expensive though!!!
