Pontiac Goes Virtual with Second Life Island

Most people have a hard enough time managing their own hectic lives, but there are those out there who enjoy creating virtual identities in games like Second Life. The rapidly growing online game has more than one million users, or as they like to be called, “residents,” who create their own character, tools and now — thanks to Pontiac — automotive projects.

The brand has launched a virtual landmass inside the game called Motorati Island for Second Lifers to communally develop auto-based projects like racetracks. Of course, the company is also working on a virtual dealership where virtual Pontiac Solstice roadsters (top image) can be purchased using the virtual world’s currency.

I've been wondering....what appeal will real world brands have in the virtual world, where anything is possible? You can already buy cars that can fly in the air and dive under water. So what is going to make people want to roll in a Pontiac Solstice?

I guess the answers are easy. Either a) they have a Solstice in real life and want to carry that over into their virtual life, or b) they want a Solstice in real life but don't because of affordability or practicality. Either answer doesn't do anything to bring Pontiac more business.

In short, the Pontiac Solstice in Second Life isn't going to compete with just the other (non-existant) car brands, it's going to compete with everything anyone can imagine.

it's also primarily another form of advertising. If a company is supporting your favorite game/hobby with new features that you can use then you'll have brand loyalty in a strange third party way I guess.

Although you never know, driving a Second Life Solstice may be the hot accessory for the gamers.
