Mercedes Shows Off New CL63 AMG Before Paris Debut
Ah Paris, the perfect city for romance, food, art...and 525-hp luxury coupes? So thinks Mercedes-Benz, as the upcoming Paris auto show will play host to the company’s latest high-speed offering, the CL63 AMG. The new 2007 CL coupe hasn’t even gone on sale in the U.S. yet, but we’re already getting full info on its uber-brethren.
The CL63 AMG, featuring the 6.3-liter V-8 seen in other recent AMG models, will produce 525 hp and hit 62 mph in 4.6 seconds. Expect the price tag to be quite high — higher than the current CL55 AMG, which goes for $120,500.
Expect an even more powerful AMG version to top the CL line above the next CL600. The previous AMG version of that V-12 model cost $179,600 and put out more than 600 hp.
Ah, Paris.

Do people who buy these things look at the competition or do they just make a choice based on brand? This car doesn't seem to make any sense considering the BMW M6 is faster, can be bought for under $100K, and in my opinion is much better looking inside and out.
Well, the M6 and this car are two cars with very different personalities. Whereas the M6 is much more of a drivers car, this is more of a GT. AMG is the sport division of Mercedes, but these cars are not "hard-core" by any means, whereas the M6, with optional 6-speed, carbon fibre roof, and over all sportier, has a much more sporting personality. Buyers differ by brand loyalty, but also what kind of car they are looking for. This is much bigger than an M6, the rear seats have just about as much room as the S-Class, the luxury sedan on which this car is based, unlike the M6 which is quite smaller, based on the 5-series. I see the M6 as competition to cars like the SL55 AMG (despite it being a roadster, the car is about the same size as an M6). The M6 is competition to cars like the Maserati GranSport Compact Coupe, V8 Vantage, XKR, and 911 Turbo. CL63 AMG and the M6 are not really in the same class. It is more in the class of the DB9, and Bentley CGT, despite being about 30grand cheaper.
