2007 Acura TL and TL Type-S

Acura TLS

Acura’s other big release for 2007 is a revamped TL sedan. Besides minor interior and exterior enhancements, the TL gets a new trim level — the high-performance Type-S.

Unfortunately, the base TL doesn’t see any power gains over last year’s 258-hp, 3.2-liter V-6, but both models receive an enhanced five-speed automatic. The Type-S does get a larger V-6 that produces 283 hp and comes with either the five-speed automatic with steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles or an optional six-speed manual transmission. There’s also a limited-slip differential in Type-S models with the six-speed manual.

Inside there are new seats and a new three-spoke steering wheel.

The 2007 model sees only the smallest revisions to the exterior, most noticeably around the front grille area. Type-S models see a special black chrome grille, rear spoiler, unique taillights and 10-spoke alloy wheels.

Stay tuned for pricing but plan to see the 2007 TL at dealerships later this fall.

i think that the new type-s is beautiful i have a 2004tl im about to change it to the type-s i see it goes faster and faster is better and it seems you could upgrade the motor much easier then the regular tl and thats what im hopeing to do i love the trim all around i just wish they had a option for the gears to be red or blue because im more into blue then red i think they should have kept it blue do to fact that every car hasd red or yellow and orange but you hardly see the blue that the tl has

I love the new look of the TL Type-S. You can see some more pictures and specs at my blog. acura-tls.blogspot.com. It has a lot of pics and reviews, plus stats regarding this great car.

I waited for the next generation Maxima, having owned three before, but the TL stepped up[ to the plate with the best thing since sliced bread. There are just to many options to let this one go,Sorry Nissan, Acura has hit a Homerun.

Initial impressions:

Color is the Kinetic Blue. This color is nicer in person than pictures show. Would prefer a little darker though.

I'm not a fan of the wheels, but, like the color, they are nicer in person than pictures show.

Torque steer is not an issue - I think Acura is limiting the torque on take-off. This could cut into 0-60 times though. Speaking of which, here are my guesses...

0-60 in 5.6. 1/4 mile in 14.3. The car pulls more once it gets moving.

One thing of note is the sound system. It is AWESOME. Listen to the sample DVD that comes with the car and you will be sold.

Fit and finish is nice. Handling is good but they put these junk Michelins tires on stock (I was hoping for the Potenzas). Might swap those out soon.

XM and NAV are of high quality and work better than most.

That's all I can think of now. If you have specific questions, let me know!

I own a 2007 acura tl type s it is a great car,l but be ready to spend some money on gas

Richard Woodford

I recently got to run some g-timer tests on my TL with about 600 miles on it.

0-60 in 5.7 seconds (wheel spin/traction is a limiting factor)

1/4 mile in 14.2 seconds at 99 mph.

now, where did that SH-AWD go?

SH AWD is offered on the RL, the MDX and the RDX. Not the TL.

I have a type-s 2007, great car, people pay attention to the dumbest features on cars now-a-days. This car has everything a self-respecting luxury sports car has to offer. spend 6k more on your own, and drop a supercharger on it for at least 360 hp! I'm doing that next month, see ya on the tampa interstate!

A-man

i know that the TL doesn't have SH-AWD. that's what I was pointing out. what i'm saying that with a little less weight, a little more power, and a decent 6-speed manual, the TL could do without the AWD. But SH-AWD should be available, type s or not. let's say acura got a triple on the type-s, but not a home run.

P.S. the RDX doesn't have SH-AWD

I see what you're saying now. If the TL HAD SH-AWD it would be better. Yes I agree like a Subaru Legacy GT.

But we're not that dumb on the RDX. From Honda's own site:
The sport-luxury SUV marketplace is in an exciting state of evolution. With the arrival of Acura's new RDX 5-passenger Entry Premium SUV, this emerging market segment gets a decidedly "connected" spin. Not only does this all-new SUV combine the immediate response of Acura's first-ever turbocharged engine and the agile control of Super Handling All-Wheel Drive(TM) (SH-AWD(TM)), the RDX puts state-of-the-art communications, navigation and audio entertainment at the driver's fingertips. And the RDX delivers it all in keeping with Acura's long-established tradition of respect for crisp, contemporary styling and simple, intuitive operation that adds to the driving experience.

I like the design of the TL. However, I am disappointed that the TL lacks what its competitors offer. Many complain that the TL's biggest downfall is the front wheel drive. This alone is enough for me to step up to something else. Why would anyone buy a high-performance car with FWD? What's worse is that Honda came out with the more powerful Type-S without addressing the problem of torque steer.

The Type-S is simply a way for Honda to keep TL sales up until they replace the current generation. Don't fall for their gimmick. If Honda wants Acura to be recognized as a true luxury brand, they need to step up. Otherwise, Acura is nothing more than a really nice Honda.

A-man

Isn't that what Acuras have always been? Really nice Hondas? I agree, though, Acura needs to live up to its rep as a sports company, and not be so close to Hondas which are widely known as fuel-sipping slow cars.

The new TL-S is amazing! I've had mine for 3 weeks now and unfortunelty, I already know that these TL-S's can take an accident like a CHAMP! I got hit from behind at a complete stop by an Isuzu Rodeo going 50 mph. My trunk should have been in my back seat. Yet the back of the car absorbed the impact soooo well so it's not as bad as it should be. The officer at the scene said that what happened should have been on an Acura commercial

007TL-S

I looked /Demo'd a few car's before purchasing my TL Type S, The lexus IS350 had to much of a "femanine"looking exterior, an interior that would make anyone fall asleep behind the wheel! BMW 325iwas nice, but a cramped interior for a 4 door ,wanna be Japanese styling cue's , less navigation and other option's put it's price a bit over the TL's , not worth it Value wise ! and then the Infinity G35, nice, Midiocre styling, cramped interior , questioable overall reliablity! , but not as nice as the TL-S.....The Tl-S had the option's, a tweaked more aggressive exterior, and a nicer interior to boot(roomy) back seating! a planted suspension ,great engine, decent reliability and of course the right price for the money! this car has finally evolved into a driver's performance Sedan!.... THANK YOU ACURA!!!! "I LOVE MY TL-S TYPE S" , and sure you folk's will too!

former Bimmer

I've driven a BMW 525i and 540i 6-speed since 1993.I test drove the IS350 (too small), Audi S4 (not reliable), 530i (too $), G35 (poor fit and finish) but the Type-S was just right. The front wheel drive has a different feel but its just something to get used to. Best fun factor for the $.

mike

Just got my 2007 TL type-s 2 weeks ago. Love the car, only problem I have come across is the trans feels like it is always trying to hold the gear or not shifting to the next when it should. I have a 2001 CL Type-S on my third trans but never felt this for the last 100,000 miles. Was woundering if anyone came across this problem before, or if the trans is just screwed up. thanks

A-man

Has anyone with a type-s had any transmission problems? multiple visits to the dealership for a full transmission replacement? i've heard rumours that the transmission maintenance is horrible, and there are some rattles apparent within a few weeks of purchasing the vehicle. if anyone has had these problems please post.

P.S. to Dave T. my mistake on the RDX youi're right it does have SH-AWD.

A-man

sorry i hadnt read all the comments before posting. i meant mechanical problems, something not working the way it should. i think the tranny holding a gear is part of the "sporty" character of the type-s

Anon

The last generation TL/CL transmissions were a major bust. However, Acura mechanics I talked to said there have been very little problems with the 2004+ TL's and the Type-S transmissions. So far.

bee

I bought a 2007 TL-S and have had it for under 6 months and just found out today that they have to replace the transmission? Not impressed....has anyone else had this problem?

A-man

Oh, no don't worry, the tranny problem was only with the 2nd generation. You're driving a third generation. All good.

I confirmed with two different dealers that the TL-S will be avail with sh-awd for 09

First of all, this is my second acura. I had an Acura Integra for 11 years and was the most reliable car I've ever owned. So I upgraded and bought a brand new Acura TL, 2005. Although it's a great car, I'm a little disappointed that I have had to get new brakes, a new battery and new tires and I have less then 30K on my car. I think I had 15K when I needed the brakes. Does everyone think this is normal?

I own a 2007 TL that is now 10 months old with approx 14,000 miles. My transmission started to have serious problems recently so I took it to me delaer in Tustin, CA. They worked on it for a few days and then told me they would need to replace the entire transmission. It took about a week for a new one to arrive from the factory...and took 9 days total for them to get my car done. The dealer service was good and I had a loaner car the whole time....but I am shocked and disappointed that my car needed this done. It obviously didnt cost me anything due to it being a warranty issue...but this has sure made me question the quality of Honda/Acura.

MAX GTR

my maxima kills TL type s so sad lol slow ass tls

I have an '06 TL with the 6-speed manual. After having for a few thousands miles the tranmission starting grinding primarily when shifting into 3rd. I have a friend who has a Civic Si with same trans and same problem. Honda hasn't admited to this yet but they attemped to first replace the trans fluid and when that didn't resolve it they replaced the 3rd gear. Guess what, same problem exists. Now they are telling me to wait for a service bulliten. So I'm stuck with my crappy trans until they figure out how to fix this. There is nothing official on this yet because I'm sure they don't want everyone to know and not but they're cars. If I were any of you I would look elsewhere or at the very least DO NOT GET THE 6-SPEED!!

Yohann

I just bought a 6MT 2008 TL-S so I will find out eventually how good the trans is. No point in staying away from a 6 speed, might as well buy a Camry if you can't have a manual. I thought about the G35 but the mileage stinks for a car so close to the TL-S.

I have a tl type s 07 I bought it back in december of 06 it has about 27000 thousand miles on it and it is a 6 speed manual. 3rd gear locks u out some times on down shifts or high rpm shifts, but over all its is a beast. I use full synthetic oil plus v-power gas only and its will eat any g35 or gay nissan maxima any day. For new tl 6 spped owners though one thing that will help stop the car from grinding or locking you out of thrid gear is to be sure to stomp the clutch pedal to the floor. It works for me try it!

Michael

LOL...the guy that put the tl takes accidents
Black on black 6spd tl type s
like a champ thats a good one. and its actually true i hit a thick cement poll and took it down doing more than 60 mph and walked out witout a scracthed on me. i also agree with why fwd it does well but it could do better i am looking forward to the 09 all wheel drive. those with the 07 and 08 get the intake from injen they do really good and puts you 256hp at the wheels enough to take out an evo.i read most comments and i can i agree with most of you expectually about third gear i'll give it a try Anil

I had to replace the brakes on my Acura TL Type S around 23K miles. We were really disappointed that they didn't last longer.

ibv

i have my tl-s since nov 2006, and so far no problems. and about the maxy, my tl-s will smoke it any time and any day. The only thing i'm not so happy about, i had about 23k and had to change brakes, and they aren't that cheap. But over all i got the most bang for my buck. For what you pay, you will get on the TL-S. it's only like 4k's more then the base line, and you WILL get a lot for those 4k.

I've had an TL 2005 for almost 2 years, and right now the car has 54,350 miles, and trully honest I do treat da car baddd,,real bad. the top speed goes all the way to 151 MPH, and the spped control takes over and dropped to 140 MPH,, I really love this car, on my opinion I think it's impressive. Of course for the money. So well the point is that I have never ever had problems with the car at all. Nothing,, but nothing. Just Oil and tire rotation. my car is AT, and works perfect.

I've had my 07TL type S for 15months now. My wife and I have been complaining about 3rd gear since driving it off the lot. 3 months ago they replaced trans oil and this seemed to help for 6 wks. Just a couple of days ago the dealership decided they will actually try and fix it. We now have a rental and our hoping for the best. From what I've read on these blogs, sounds like it wont be fixed unless it's replaced.

sandy

the tl-s will get the maxima but the TL will get its ass handed to them... i own a 04 maxima and raced both the type s and the regular... the type s put about 1 car and a half on my while i put 2 or more cars on the TL from a dig to 125!

type S is sick as hell tho

drdavidhq

I own TL Type S 2008, it is a great car! Nothing like it! I have drived this car 7 Months and I can't find anything wrong in it! Specially passing Maximas, G35s, Lexus, etc...LOL!

Have had my 07 TL-S since March 07, and the more I drive it, the more I love it. It's not the most fun car I've ever driven (that distinction goes to a Mini S, which is even more fun than a BMW Z3, both manual), but it's the most fun car you could drive that you also don't mind taking a long trip in. Only quibbles are the controls for the Nav (I wish there was a way to turn it off quickly), the mega-dusting front Brembos, and the so-so stock Michelins (which are rather noisy and are only middling in the snow...I'll replace with something different when it's time). Have taken two long summer trips in it, and with A/C cranking and cruise set at about 78 through the mountains of the mid-southeast, I average an amazing 30.5 mpg on the trips. Typical commute mpg (mix of flat highway + hilly suburbia) is about 22 (and I have a pretty heavy foot, although I don't jack-start unless absolutely necessary). Have only ever filled with Shell V-Power. Plenty of power whenever I need it, and the only torque steer issues are at fast take-off from a stop into a turn...at whcih point it can be a little wild.
