More on the Land Rover LR2

Lr211

Land Rover introduced the LR2 with a celebrity bang last month, but today we get many more images of the compact luxury SUV, including interior shots from its full press kit. Click on the link below for more photos. Here’s a brief look at what we find interesting about this new entry in the market:

  • Combined fuel economy projected at 25.2 mpg. That is far better than the BMW X3 and considerable for a six-cylinder engine, but horsepower and torque are both in the 230 range, so don’t expect this to be a quick vehicle. It reaches 60 mph in 8.4 seconds; the X3 does it in 7.9.
  • Land Rover says it's a true 4x4 even though it's based on a car frame. But we all know most buyers just want the added benefit that a full-time 4x4 — or all-wheel-drive system — can provide on the street.
  • Reversible cargo floor with carpet on one side and water-resistant surface on the other.
  • Keyless start.
  • Lots of safety features, including a rollover mitigation system, stability control, antilock brakes, front side-impact airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and an inflatable knee bolster for the driver.
  • On sale toward the end of 2006, likely December.

is it just me or does that look like just another cookie cutter design from ford motor company?

Nic Tweedel

Ford Escape anyone?

Bill Hoy

It looks like a spawn of a Forester and the Escape. I guess we're all just jaded...

hmmmm its a Ford alright lol.

RayCee

It is conservatively designed but still looks good IMO. As for underneath the skin, I think it's going to be the real deal. I'd love one.

I kind of like it. It's not as stylish as the Range Rover but come on, the Escape? It's nicer than that. Interior looks great.

I love the LR3! LR2 also looks good!

I think it looks awesome. Way, way better looking and better features than the cheap Escape, Forester, Liberty, and even RAV4.

I like what I am seeing. Do you know what they will be priced like?

bob

looks hot to me I want one!

sweet when can I get one

ryan

My wife has an Escape. That's the sheet metal off the escape alright. Even the front fascia is the same except for a different grille. As for the interior, it is much nicer. I'm sure the suspension has been tweeked and a bigger engine. It is what the Taurus was to the Jaguar sedan. Same chassis, different guts. If it was placed in the mid - hi $30's...it'd be a deal. Won't be near it though.

Trevor

It's not the same chassis as the escape. Doesn't share a single part. It is based off the EUCD platform that Volvo has used for a couple vehicles. Pricing will be 34,700 plus option packages.

test drove one yesterday and liked it. Very classy and distinctive with plenty of power for me. About 40k loaded up. Gonna wait to buy though to see what quality ratings will be after on the market awhile.

This baby Land Rover has a lot of the Range Rover Sport styling cues that many Americans love and Freelander styling cues that many Europeans love. It will be a hit!!!!!!!

Some odd MPG figures being quoted there. X3 I drive gives and average of 28mpg and that is with the driving stacked mainly in favour of hilly short rides. Far better performance and efficiency from an X3. The 2007 3L Diesels go like manure off of a spade and her perfectly balanced. You might get a few more gadgets for your money in an LR2 and they will naturally do a huge amount more offroad. X3 is the drivers car.

Chris

What most North Americans dont know as Range rover /Land Rover has only become real popular over here in the last few years is what everyone in Europe / Africa /Australia knows about Land Rover:

When they work, they are fine offroad vehicles, the rest of the time, and most ofthe time, you are spending money to keep them on the road, reliability has always been notoriously bad on Range and Landies. The old saying is, if they stop leaking oil, they must have run dry! Ive had Land rovers and Rangies, fun to drive when they work, but reliability is terrible, never again for me folks.
