Hummer H2 Wheels Can Fall Off

Hummerh2

The Sacramento Bee ran an investigative report on its front page today regarding Hummer H2s and the possibility their wheels can fall off. There have been more than 20 cases of H2s experiencing the extreme problem, including the Bee’s own automotive editor Mark Glover. His 2002 test vehicle is shown here after losing its front left wheel in the newspaper’s parking lot.

Most of the cases occurred after the vehicle struck another object, but others — including Glover — say they didn’t hit anything. GM says there’s nothing wrong with the part that caused the problem, even though they replaced it in 2003; complaints documented in the Bee’s report state model years ranging through 2004. NHTSA is continuing an investigation that could eventually lead to a recall. GM says there is nothing wrong with the vehicle.

Dumb junk! !! !!!

ellis

I'm calling B.S.!!!! some type of previous impact had to have happened to that H2 for the wheel to just fall off. he either hit something or someone before him did.

it's the same assembly on all the Tahoes and Escalades. you don't hear of their wheels just falling off.

A Nonymous

These things can and do happen. Wheel bearings, balljoins, and all mounts for the strut tower, control arms and lateral links need to be designed and manufactured properly for the wheels to remain connected to the frame. Any defects or under-engineering (cutting corners) can, and has lead to this kind of problem. Remember that Ford had a similar problem with the Focus back in 2000. With GM in a financial tailspin and losing market share, they react by putting out ever-cheaper cars that fall apart figuratively, or in this case, literally. Their claim that "nothing is wrong with the vehicle" reeks of the same insensitivity to customers that got them into this mess in the first place. This is the same company whose Maibus, Impalas, and Monte Carlos are randomly leaving people stranded all over the road due to a horribly designed and faulty PassKey system, and yet they are content to charge customers $500 for a new body control module and ignition lock instead of issuing a recall.

I hope GM dies a horrible Chapter 7 bankruptcy death. I will be first in line to spit on their grave.

One point not covered here is that when stretched, a hummer exceeds the GVWR given by the manufacturer, brakes/all up weight etc all effect the stopping distance or suspension, hence ( as the manufacteres states ) they should not be stretched.

This is a recall on the Spindel joint for the steering on 03 H2's. this was corerected in 04.

I don't know how they could make a Hummer until this extend.

Hummer H2 Transmission
The H2 has a half ton transmisson in the 3/4 ton Hummer the window sticker states the trans is heavy duty they do not say it's a 1/2 ton trans. 3rd and drive function went out at 80k The vichicle has had no hard use, GM felt a $1500.00 coupon would take care of me replacing the trans at a cost of $2500.00 after a dealer discount. The Hummer advertising is misleading at how rugged & durable the vehicle is supposed to be. Odviously the warranty on my 03 H2 was expired. After picking up the vehicle with the new transmission installed the instument panel Tach was not working so that will be another $300-$400 unwarrantied cost. Whats Next???
