Ford Adds Two Years to Warranty

Ford_fusion_final_1

Here’s a reason to wait a few months on that candy-red Fusion you’ve been eyeing: The ’07 models will have a longer warranty. Automotive News reports that Ford will extend its drivetrain policy to five years or 60,000 miles for Ford and Mercury vehicles, and six years or 70,000 miles for Lincoln models. Previous programs lasted three years for Ford and Mercury, and four years for Lincoln.

The drivetrain warranty covers all engine and transmission-related parts. Other parts are covered under Ford’s three-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, which won’t change.

The move counters reports of low quality in recent years, and now the Blue Oval’s warranty matches that of rival Toyota. Asian automakers Hyundai, Kia and Mitsubishi still lead the industry with standard 10-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranties.

The new warranty begins today, and is retroactive on any 2007 model already sold.

I have no idea if they're selling the '07 Fusion yet, so you may have to wait a few months anyway.

But it's my understanding that they'll also offer a longer warranty on some of the '06 models still on the lot.

KC,

Good points. A quick internet search revealed no '07 Fusions for sale near our Chicago office, and I imagine they'll arrive on the lots with the rest of next year's carryovers this fall -- hence waiting a few months on that car you might be eyeing. But with this new warranty, there could be an even better deal on the outgoing '06 models.
