Nissan Versa Pricing Announced: Starts at $12,450
Nissan’s entry in the U.S. subcompact market just got a sticker price. The Versa hatchback comes in two trims with three different transmissions. The base Versa 1.8 S with a six-speed manual transmission costs $12,450, and the four-speed automatic costs $13,250. The higher-level trim, the SL, will cost $14,450 for the six-speed manual and $15,450 for the CVT (continuously variable transmission) version. Both trims come with a 122-hp, 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine.
Front seat side-impact and side curtain airbags come standard, and the CVT-equipped SL gets 30/36 mpg in city/highway driving.
The Versa is another solid model entering the now-hot subcompact market and actually goes on sale today.

30/36mpg isn't impressive for a subcompact really. A almost midsize Civic sedan with the same sized engine and regular automatic transmission is rated at 30/40mpg.
If only Nissan gave the Versa a traction/stability control as an option, that would surely have set it apart from the competition. As it is now it's ok, but not really anything truly special, speaking for myself. I would consider purchasing, but it's way down on my '07 list of machines to check into.
Peace!
Traction control is a fairly simple add-on, but stability control is a high-end feature most automakers reserved for cars $25,000 and up. Hyundai has broken the mold with stability control on a $17,000 vehicle, but for the most part it's still available only on more expensive stuff.
The Scion xB actually has stability control but can's be equipped with side airbags. The xA is the opposite. Personally, I don't think the Versa stacks up against the Honda Fir, even if it does start $1400 lower.
