Mazda Unveils Retractable Hardtop MX-5 aka Miata

The world might not need a power retractable hardtop MX-5 roadster, but it just got one. Mazda dropped the cone of silence on the new model last night in preparation for a British auto show next month. There is no word on pricing, or when it will be available, but the model will definitely be coming to the U.S. Expect the pricing of the retractable hardtop model to be at least $2,000 more than the current edition, which ranges between $20,435 and $26,700.

We’d hazard a guess that it will be no more than $5,000 over the current sticker. This move also throws down the gauntlet clearly at GM, which introduced the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky to compete with the MX-5 and also claims to have the least expensive retractable hardtop on the market in the Pontiac G6 convertible. This new MX-5 could end up being priced below the G6’s $27,865 starting price. In this war of fun, low-price roadsters, the consumer seems to be winning.
